A reference of all the game files and directories that may be encountered while using Fallout 4 and the Creation Kit. This reference will explain their uses, differences, and importance to making mods.

Data[edit | edit source]

Fallout 4 and the Creation Kit will load file assets from the Data directory, located ...\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout 4\Data\. The game will load Data Files, Archive Files, and Initialization Files from this folder. With the Enable Loose Files configuration, Fallout 4 will also consider several sub-directories that load specific assets based on their file type.

Fallout 4 and the Creation Kit will store various application settings in your Windows User Profile This is typically located C:\Users\<USERNAME>\.... There, you see folders such as Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Music, and Pictures.

Directories

  • C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Fallout4\..: Application settings related to Load Order and activated DLC. Used by Fallout 4 and the Creation Kit.
  • C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Temp\PapyrusTemp\...: Used by the Creation Kit to write temporary files for compiling Papyrus scripts.
  • C:\Users\<USERNAME>\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\...:
